This documents their PhD research into zines as anarchist sexual pedagogy, with a mix of academic thoughts, creative experiments, and personal reflections. They also run Zine Club in Belfast at Paperxclips (queer bookshop, barbers and community space) and are bringing collaborative zines from the club, with no fixed themes but plenty of queer joy.

    @easterroadpress (instagram)

Steven Fraser

Sunday

  • Steven Fraser creates zines, personal comics and perzines. His new comics take advantage of being self-printed. For example, each copy of his comic ‘Awkward Silence’ has a hand sewn cover and this makes each copy unique. He likes all his zines and comics to be personal and intimate experiences between the zine and the reader, and thinks that this makes them appeal to autistic people (such as himself) and other readers who have interest in neurodiversity and mental health.

    Steven create zines that are designed to be read by autistic adults, but can be enjoyed by anyone. Some of his zines contain theatre scripts, illustrations and comics. These stories are presented as performance scripts to immerse the reader in the narrative. They are short plays contained within zines and allow the reader to better understand autistic people. The illustrations and comics add to the performative experience and allow the reader to be involved in the story. The topics include mental health, sex, identity, friendship and being working class.

Rachael House

Saturday and Sunday

  • Rachael House has been making queer zines since the 1990s, firstly with the autobiographical Red Hanky Panky. More recently, most of her zines have been double sided riso printed minizines made from one sheet of A4 paper. She sells these for 50p each, as she comes from a time when zines were largely traded for other zines, printed secretly on work photocopiers, and not a stepping stone to any 'legitimate' publishing, fame or fortune. She strongly believes in zines as a way to build friendships and community. Subjects close to her heart include, mental health, queer stuff (with an emphasis on bi politics), ageing, gender, menopause, intersectional feminism and the shitshow of a government we are enduring... She'll also be bringing a selection of previous zines, riso prints, radical name tapes and ceramic badges.

Mits Makes

Sunday

  • Mits makes stuff and things, mostly zines! In February 2022, she was introduced to the world of zines through finding a Coin-Operated Press workshop. Since then, she’s continued attending, made monthly submissions and visited plenty of fairs.

    There are plenty of reasons why she loves zine-making so much, but primarily they are mediums where she can uniquely express aspects of myself considered taboo back in her home country (Malaysia) or embrace parts of myself she once disapproved. Hence, the zines she’s made and sold are based on my personal experiences, tied especially to themes of sexuality, disability and mental health. Plus, she likes to make them small, quirky and colourful, just like her!

    With her zines, her hope is to connect with others, and inspire them. There is joy in sharing her journey of self-exploration and self-healing, and finding kindred people who have felt the same way.

Their exploration into the voice expands on research into queer spirituality, being in the sea as a form of resourcing and co-regulation, relating to the sea as a trans AFAB (assigned female at birth) person, and crip care and access. Their zines include: Screaming At The Sea: Rage and Grief; My Sick and Disabled Guide to Running Events and Workshops…; (Re)Claiming Agency: Care, Trauma and the Medical Institution; and some mini zines and free zines created as a commission for People United's Queer zines of care on the kent coast.

Take One

Saturday and Sunday

  • Meka is a queer photographer based in Manchester. Over the past 2/3 years they have been documenting the queer community of Manchester and curating that into zines, books and prints. Her most recent piece was 'A Book to give your Grandma a Heart Attack' where she turned conversations, debates, struggles and celebrations of when they came out to their (very religious) family into a visual aid. The goal within her work is to visually display the queer community and give a voice, story and platform to queer individuals. Their work is always tied to the motto of 'created by queer people, for everyone' as everything she produces is a product of queer people creating stunning art through emotions tied to their sexuality. All of her work has always been 0-profit and they sell their work for what they paid for it. She does this as she feels strongly about making educational art accessible and not profiting off people wanting to simply become more open minded and open hearted.
